Throughout my years as a clinical nutritionist, I have collaborated with hundreds of clients, including athletes aiming to enhance their performance, overworked professionals dealing with side effects of stress, and individuals facing unresolved gut issues that traditional methods may have overlooked. Our journey always begins with establishing a solid nutritional foundation—ensuring we include the right macronutrients and micronutrients in our diets while staying properly hydrated. From there, we delve deeper to uncover the root causes of any symptoms through additional testing. I can’t count how many individuals I’ve worked with who have cycled through countless supplements in hopes of alleviating anxiety, stress, poor sleep, low mood, or persistent gas and bloating. Although various remedies may offer some relief, others may fall short, resulting in a cabinet full of potential solutions that didn’t quite do the trick. This is where holistic testing, often unavailable through conventional means, proves invaluable.

I recall working with a client who experienced daily anxiety, headaches, gas, bloating, and issues with sleep and focus. Despite trying numerous prescribed and natural remedies, she found little long-term relief.I recommended she assess her levels of neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) and vitamin D, which are essential biomarkers for understanding brain health. When neurotransmitters such as serotonin, GABA, and dopamine are out of balance, it’s common to face occasional anxiety, sleep disturbances, poor focus, and memory issues. When her results arrived, they shed light on her symptoms that had not been previously addressed. Her vitamin D, serotonin—our mood-regulating neurotransmitter—and GABA, our calming neurotransmitter, were all low, providing clarity on her anxiety, low mood, and sleep problems. Additionally, elevated levels of glutamate and histamine suggested a potential imbalance in her gastrointestinal tract. High glutamate levels can also contribute to headaches and anxiety. I recommended several amino acids and nutrients to support her brain chemical imbalances, along with a food sensitivity test to identify potential triggers for her elevated glutamate and histamine levels, as well as daily gut stress.

When the results of the food sensitivity test came back, she was astonished by the numerous favorite foods that showed elevated sensitivity. Specifically, her results indicated high reactivity to gluten and cow’s milk dairy, both of which can cause gas, bloating, bowel changes, and even headaches. By doing an elimination diet to remove these trigger foods and incorporating the suggested supplements for her low serotonin and GABA, she experienced significant improvement after six weeks. By the twelve-week mark, her headaches had vanished, she was sleeping soundly, daily anxiety had greatly diminished, and gut stress was resolved. Her symptoms had previously affected every aspect of her life, to the extent that she feared leaving her home. Thanks to targeted testing and a personalized regimen, she was finally able to enjoy a family vacation to Disney World. To truly address the root of health issues, we must delve deeper and use advanced testing to expedite the journey to wellness.
