With a servant’s heart and a clear vision, Austin pharmacist Bill Swail founded Peoples Rx in 1980 and grew it into the first integrative pharmacy in the U.S. From our incredible selection of professional-grade supplements to our award-winning full-service pharmacy, our knowledgeable staff takes a comprehensive, holistic approach to healing,—seeking to identify the root cause of a person’s health concerns and offering suggestions that supplement and complement Western medicine. Keeping Austin Weird & Well for over 40 years

The following fun facts are proof! We’ve been keeping it weird in a good way, y’all. 

Before there were 24-hour pharmacies, founder Bill Swail offered his home number as the after-hours number, and he’d go and open the store in the middle of the night if ever a customer had an urgent need.
Back in the day, doctors used to recommend cigarettes and all pharmacies carried them, but in 1989 on “National Smokeout Day,” we burned our cigarette inventory in the Westlake store’s parking lot and stopped selling them permanently, making national news. To make up for the lost revenue, we brought in healthy, delicious foods made-to-order.
We’ve always believed in food as medicine, so in 1997, we helped the Barton Creek Farmers’ Market get started right in our own parking lot over in Westlake, and we sold Betsy Ross’ grass-fed beef there and in our stores, well before Whole Foods ever sold local, grass-finished products. 
As part of our mission to educate the public about holistic and alternative health choices, our founder hosted weekly radio shows on 2 to 3 different local stations for over a decade, interviewing top authors, doctors, and researchers in their fields.
We’re proud to be a part of the success of the world-famous Austin City Limits Music Festival, joining in their infancy in 2005 to run their “General Store,” and continuing as a preferred vendor, operating the two “ACL Bodegas” each year and enjoying every live-music minute of meeting those everyday festival-goer needs! 
Always ahead of the curve, Peoples was one of the very first stores in the state of Texas to carry CBD products, before most retail and even some law enforcement even figured out it was legal! We still carry the best and most vetted CBD options around. 
Peoples Rx is the exclusive pharmacy of choice for the Austin Zoo and we love being able to help their rescued animals, whether we’re compounding medications specifically tailored for gorillas and chinchillas or capybaras and bears.
