Introduction to Barefoot Running
01/27/2018 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
$20Improve the mobility and stability of your neuro-musculoskeletal system in this short introductory course to barefoot walking and running. You must walk (correctly) before you run (correctly). And likewise, you should pistol squat before adding weight to your squat! This course will highlight the fundamental mobility, strength, and neuromuscular patterning required to excel at running. Just about anyone can slap on a pair of running shoes, go out for a run, and get a good workout. We take the skill for granted until something goes wrong. This is a class on improving your skill of running because otherwise, studies show that 80% of runner’s get injured every year. You will learn the primary elements of running that are known, according to the available evidence, to reduce the rate of injury. Additionally, we will take you through a series of primal movements, active mobility, strength & stability exercises to prepare you for minimalist or barefoot running. We will also address how to gradually integrate your new running skills into your already existing routine, or how to begin a completely new routine.
Following running prep we will go on a short 1-2 mile walk/jog/run in order to help integrate what you have learned. Lastly, we will have the opportunity to enjoy a Vinyasa Flow brought to us by Katie Rich, an experienced yoga and fitness instructor. Yoga is restorative and helps improve mindfulness, both of which are essential practices for a successful and well-rounded athlete. This practice will also help you gain flexibility in your hip flexors and other muscles critical to running and will help improve balance to strengthen your ankles and feet.
All levels from beginner to elite runners have something to gain from this course. Beat the statistics and learn some skills that will help you have a healthier and happier 2018. Please bring a yoga mat or towel, water, and shoes you are comfortable running in. Minimalist or barefoot shoes are not required but encouraged if you have them.
