With the colder months now in full swing, a little focus on cold and flu prevention can go a long way. Ayurvedic medicine is predominantly herbal and can help support immune function, as well as attack bacteria and viruses once they’ve infected. Here are some tried-and-true Ayurvedic remedies that will help keep you strong and soothe the uncomfortable symptoms of colds and flu!

Cold/sore throat remedy:

  • Take Banyan Botanicals’ neem tablets as directed, 3x/day. Neem is incredibly antimicrobial.
  • Banyan Botanicals’ amalaki 3x/day. Amalaki is derived from the amla fruit which is the highest known source of vitamin C.

Throat pain remedy:

  • 1/2 tsp Banyan Botanicals’ sitopaladi
  • 1/8 tsp Banyan Botanicals’ pippali or black pepper
  • 1 tsp honey

Eat small bites slowly. This mixture will be spicy hot to the throat but stick it out! The burning sensation is good for killing bacteria that are causing pain. Don’t eat or drink anything for 30 minutes afterward. Eat several times a day.

Throat gargle:

  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric

To keep your immune system strong and functioning well, eat a teaspoon of Banyan Botanicals’ chyavanprash jam every day during the fall and winter season. Made of amla (aka Indian gooseberry), herbs and spices, this jam is nutrient-rich, high in Vitamin C and touted for many health benefits. Spread it on your morning toast or eaten right off the spoon! It’s salty, sweet, tangy and fruity – yummy!
